Soft Wearable Robotics Startup REBODIS Selected for Samsung C-Lab Outside

REBODIS, a company specializing in soft wearable robotics, has been selected for the eighth cohort of C-Lab Outside, Samsung Electronics' external startup accelerator program.

C-Lab Outside is Samsung's open innovation program for identifying and supporting technology startups with strong growth potential. Selected companies receive commercialization funding, mentoring from Samsung Electronics engineers and business leaders, and opportunities to exhibit at major technology shows in Korea and abroad.

REBODIS was founded on soft robotics research that has been accumulating since 2008 at the Biorobotics Lab of Professor Kyu-Jin Cho in Seoul National University's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

By working with flexible materials and structures, the company has cut down on the weight and the awkward, foreign feel that have long been the main complaints about exoskeleton robots.

At the core of the company's technology is a soft wearable robot for muscle assistance, engineered around the mechanics of human gait. Its first commercial product, a knee assist robot, is currently in development, with commercialization targeted for next year. The company is running collaborative testing with clinicians and proof-of-concept trials with senior users. Additional body areas and a broader product line are planned to follow.

"Declining physical function is something that comes for all of us," said Sung-Sik Yun, CEO of REBODIS. "We expect that technology that started in a research lab will find much greater synergy at the commercialization stage through Samsung C-Lab Outside." He added, "We want to change how people think about wearable robots, and develop this into a solution people reach for naturally in everyday life."
